By HLUPEKILE NDHLOVU
KITWE District Agricultural Coordinator Thomas Mukubwe, says the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has so far purchased over 49,954 by 50kgs of maize bags in Kitwe on the Copperbelt.
Speaking during a meeting with District Agricultural Committee members, Mr Mukubwe disclosed that initially FRA targeted to buy 30,000 by 50kg bags of maize but due to over whelming response government directed that they continue buying hence exceeding initial target.
He said Kitwe has four functional depots that are actively buying maize from farmers in Mufuchani, Kakolo, Kamfinsa and Luto agricultural camps.
Mr Mukubwe disclosed that The Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) has started as deducting K400 FISP contributions through FRA adding that the deposits are been deducted from farmers who have already taken their maize to FRA.
He further said that the district staff are just waiting for the credentials to access the system to start activating the agro dealers so that farmers can start redeeming their inputs.
“Farmers can get codes once the system is unlocked,” Mr Mukubwe said.
Mr Mukubwe said only farmers who took maize before FRA started deducting directly will pass through the office for deposits.
He further encouraged DAC to sensitize their members in camps and blocks to be on the lookout for counterfeit inputs like fertizers and seeds.
“When you farmers plant counterfeit seeds and use counterfeit fertilisers, it means your harvest will be greatly compromised. So please tell your farmers in areas you are coming from to be alert and report any suspicious inputs to relevant authorities,” Mr. Mukubwe said.
And DAC Chairperson Maria Mulapi, thanked government for the effort it puts in to ensure that farmers get their farming inputs on time.
Ms Mulapi said government through FRA should just speed up the process of buying maize from farmers to ensure that farmers quickly sell their maize on time so that the access their inputs from FISP. -NAIS
